Train both sides – even when it feels awkward

Sep 14, 2025

When most people train Jiu-Jitsu, they naturally stick to their stronger side.

It feels smoother, more effective, and it gives faster results.

The problem is, by only developing one side, you create blind spots that can be exposed at the worst possible moments.

Which is why training both sides — even when it feels awkward — is the path to true balance.

At first, your weaker side will feel clumsy.

The grips won't connect, the movements will lack power, and the timing will feel off.

It can be frustrating, but keep in mind that every rep is an investment.
And over time, what was once uncomfortable will become another reliable weapon in your game.

Symmetry matters because Jiu-Jitsu is unpredictable.

You can’t always force the roll/match into your strongest angles.

Opponents will sometimes shut down your preferred side, and if you’ve ignored your weaker one, you’ll feel like you don't know what to do.

By training both sides, you will eliminate those limitations & ensure you always have another option.

This balance makes you harder to read, harder to stop, and much more dangerous.

The lessons go beyond the mats.

Working on your weaker side builds patience, humility, and resilience.

It’s a daily reminder that growth often comes through discomfort.

Instead of avoiding the awkward moments, you learn to embrace them — and that mindset will carry into every part of life.

So, if you want to build complete Jiu-Jitsu, don’t just repeat what feels comfortable. Train both sides.

Accept the frustration in the beginning, knowing that the reward is freedom, adaptability, and a game with no blind spots.
