The Power Of Training With Intent In Jiu-Jitsu
Dec 29, 2025
One of the biggest mistakes I see in Jiu-Jitsu isn’t technical. It’s how people train.
A lot of students show up, roll hard, and hope improvement happens naturally. They rely on effort alone.
While hard work is important, random work creates random results. That is to say, without a clear intention, all training is, is "just" an exercise instead of an education.
Every round should begin with a simple question... What am I working on today?
Is it guard retention, passing pressure, staying calm under mount, or defending grips?
This decision doesn’t need to be complicated, but it must be specific. As when the timer starts, your mind should already know what the round is about.
One focus is enough. Trying to improve everything at once usually improves nothing.
When you choose a single area, even losing positions becomes valuable.
For example, if you get passed while working guard retention, that failure isn’t wasted, but it’s information.
As it shows you exactly where your structure or timing is breaking down.
Every round is a lesson.
When you train with intent, your effort will become structured, your failures will become useful, and your growth will become inevitable.
You know what must be done. Approach training with clear intent!
