Positional Rolling: The Best Way To Overcome Plateaus In BJJ

advice improvement training Apr 05, 2023

Experiencing a plateau on your Jiu-Jitsu journey can be difficult. And not just because of how you feel...
But also because it's tough to push through it. For, no matter how much you train and no matter how hard you try, it can seem as if you're still not making any progress whatsoever.

But here's the thing: you're probably not focusing on the right stuff.
You might be training hard, but if you're not tackling the problem head-on then you'll probably keep stagnating for quite a while.

This is such an important point that it needs to be said again: you need to be tackling your problem head-on. And the best way to do this in Jiu-Jitsu is through positional sparring.

BREAK THROUGH PLATEAUS WITH POSITIONAL SPARRING

Instead of doing „whatever comes your way“ like in a regular roll, with positional sparring you're going to force yourself to spend time in the same exact situation that you're having trouble with.

Of course, this means that you'll first have to identify what the problem actually is.
Technique, position, transition, or a mix of all three – you won't be able to keep running away from it anymore.

And then, once you've identified the issue, you can start solving it.
Start the roll from the position or situation you want to improve. Then, no matter if you succeed or fail with what you wanted to accomplish, reset and go at it again. And again. And again...

Sure, you'll fail a lot. And yes, it'll be frustrating at times.
But positional rolling is the best approach for blasting through plateaus in Jiu-Jitsu. Just keep at it and you'll soon notice progress.

That's a promise.
