Want to Improve Faster? Start Asking Better Questions

When it comes to getting better at Jiu-Jitsu, most people focus on doing more: more classes, more reps, more rolls.

But one of the most underrated tools for accelerating your learning is something far simpler – asking better questions.

Not just any questions… but good ones.
Ones that are clear, intentional, and specific.

See, vague questions like “Why doesn’t this work?” or “How do I get better at escapes?” often lead to vague answers.

But when you ask: “What am I missing when my passing fails due to their outside leg?”
Now you’re opening a real door for growth.

And here’s something people often miss: asking questions doesn’t have to be limited to your coach.

Ask your training partners. Ask them mid-roll: “What did you feel went wrong when I went for that pass?” “What caught you off guard just now?”

That kind of real-time insight can reveal details you’d otherwise miss.

Also, keep a running list. Start writing down questions that come up during class or after open mat.

They don’t need to be perfect – they just need to reflect what you’re genuinely curious about.

Then, either find the answer yourself through trial and error…
Or bring it to someone who can help.

In the end, this habit does something more powerful than just speed up your technical progress.

It makes you a student of the art.

You stop being passive in your learning and start taking ownership of your development.

As Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just physical, it’s intellectual. And the best grapplers I know aren’t just tough.
They’re curious. They study. They ask smart questions.

And that’s why they keep improving year after year.
