BJJ Mindset Advice: Don't Show That You're Tired

advice mindset tips Jul 21, 2023

So you would like to improve your mindset for BJJ, right?
If that's the case, then here is a simple word of advice for you: don't show that you're tired.

DON'T SHOW THAT YOU'RE TIRED

You know those hard training sessions that your coach puts you through? Especially the conditioning workouts: the endless sprawls, burpees...
As well as the hard sparring sessions, at the end of which you feel like you're almost out of breath? Yes, those ones.

Now, the question is: what kind of a face do you make during these moments?

No, seriously. Do you make all sorts of grimaces? Also, do you sit (or even lay) down on the mat, looking around for the trial class guy as the next round?
Or do you stay composed as much as you can? Keeping your face as stoic as possible, attempting to display almost no emotion... And walking upright, controlling your breath, staying open to whatever comes next?

Because here's the thing. If you show that you're tired in training, that will reflect on your competition success - if your opponent sees you making those tired faces, they'll know that they could have an advantage over you.
And it will also reflect on your training. By "admitting" to yourself that you're tired, you'll convince your body that it can't go on any further...

Except it can. Your body can push through so much more than what your mind believes it can. But you have to allow it to perform.
And by admitting defeat, by letting yourself go with emotions, you're sacrificing your full potential. In training and in competition alike.

So, here's a word of advice. The next time you feel tired, don't slouch down. But walk upright. Control your breathing. And keep as stoic of a face as possible.
Then do it the following training. And the training after that. Every single time, to the best of your abilities.

Don't show that you're tired. And you'll be surprised by how far your body can go.
By how much your mindset will strengthen.
