BJJ Advice: Video Record Your Rolls

advice improvement progress tips Aug 02, 2023

Have you been stagnating with your Jiu-Jitsu progress for quite a while already? And no matter what you try to do, it's not really giving the results that you'd like?

Then here's a word of advice: start video recording your rolls.

VIDEO RECORD YOUR ROLLS

A big part of the "no improvement" issue for many BJJ athletes is that they aren't really aware of the areas they need to work on.
Sure, they have their own ideas on what they would like to develop and how good they are in those techniques... But they don't really know what they're missing.

Usually a coach should be able to take a look and give you feedback. However, as it is the case in a lot of BJJ academies, it might be the case that there are more than enough students in your academy that the coach cannot give equal attention to each and every single one of them.
Which means that they aren't able to give you the most amount of feedback possible. Which is hurting your progress.

One way to circumvent this issue is to record your rolls.
Here's how you should go about it:

  • Ask for approval from the head coach/owner of the academy
  • Position the camera in a spot where it's least likely to be in the way for you and your training partners
  • Click "record"
  • Roll
  • Watch the roll when you get home - look for issues that you've experienced and problems you could've solved better
  • Look online for solutions (or ask your coach or more senior training partners in the following class)
  • Rinse and repeat

If you do this on a consistent basis, you'll notice your Jiu-Jitsu skyrocketing in ridiculous time.
That's a promise.

Now go do it. Grab a camera (you can use your phone). Hit "record".
And get to work.
