A Message To The 40+ Jiu-Jitsu Practitioners
Mar 06, 2026If you train Jiu-Jitsu past 40, you’re already doing something remarkable.
Most people at that stage of life have slowly moved away from physically demanding challenges. They settle into routines that aren less uncomfortable.
But you chose a different path.
You chose to step onto the mats where you might be the oldest person in the room. You chose to train with people faster, younger, and sometimes stronger.
You chose to keep learning, failing, adjusting, and improving.
That choice alone deserves respect.
But the truth is that your relationship with Jiu-Jitsu changes as you get older.
And that’s not a disadvantage, it’s simply a different phase of the journey.
You see, when you’re younger, training often revolves around intensity.
You roll hard, chase submissions, and measure progress through performance.
But over time, priorities should begin to shift.
Longevity should become more important than fast progress.
The goal is no longer to win every round or prove yourself to everyone in the room.
The goal is something much more meaningful: to keep training, improving, and enjoying the art for years to come.
Recovery, for example, must become a part of training itself.
Sleep, mobility, and strength training are no longer optional details. They are essential pieces of the process.
And your body simply requires more time to adapt & repair. Ignoring that reality leads to injuries that interrupt the journey you’re trying to sustain.
Respecting recovery allows you to stay consistent. And consistency is what builds long-term progress.
And no, you may not match the explosiveness of the younger athletes in the room, but you will gain something more valuable: efficiency.
Timing and pressure will start to replace speed & athleticism.
Choosing training partners wisely also becomes more important.
Not every round needs to be a battle. Good training partners understand control & responsibility.
They push you to improve while respecting that everyone in the room is trying to train tomorrow as well.
Longevity in Jiu-Jitsu is rarely about toughness.
It’s about intelligent choices.
So if you’re over 40 and still training, remember this...
You’re not behind. You’re not slowing down the room. You’re not “too old” to improve.
You’re simply playing the long game.
Stay curious. Stay patient.
Train intelligently & protect your body.
Because the real goal isn’t to prove something in a single round.
The real goal is to keep stepping on the mats for years to come.
