#TechniqueTuesday - Brabo Choke versus Deep Half Guard

#techniquetuesday Apr 06, 2021

Some key details to focus on while you're watching this...

Focus on preventing the position first & foremost

  • Recognize the entries and react when our partner gets the underhook. We have two things to watch out for - the Lucas Leite/Dogfight/Coyote Half Guard and the Deep Half Guard entry.
  • To counter the Leite Half Guard, we have to move TOWARDS the underhook as we pop up and free our knee to pin their far hip. To counter the Deep Half Guard entry when we pop up, we will want  to pin their inside arm to prevent access to our legs.

Focus on creating a powerful defensive & offensive position.

  • Make sure to check their top leg as you sprawl your hip onto their shoulders. Once here, look to figure-four your legs and start to feed the lapel. This position will make it difficult for them to get underneath you.
  • Use your Brabo grip to help you frame and create the space needed to base up on your elbow and take the top position.

Finishing the Brabo choke

  • Set up your Brabo chokes with cross choke attempts. Clear their frames, and trap their arm with your body. Finish with  your nose-to-nose with your opponent as you tighten your grip. Keep your shoulder over their nose to avoid getting rolled over by your partner
  • Remember, use the double threat here. If they go flat to defend the choke, they concede the pass. If they stay on their side to defend the pass, they will concede the choke. The best part is our grips allow us to attack throughout all these transitions.
