How To Ask For A BJJ Belt Promotion?

advice belt promotion tips training Aug 25, 2023

So... You've been thinking about asking your coach for a belt promotion?
Or maybe just for a new stripe?

Well, let me tell you: there is a right way and a wrong way to ask for a promotion.

HOW TO ASK FOR A BJJ BELT PROMOTION

Okay, here's the thing. If you're thinking about asking your coach for a promotion directly... Don't do it.
I've had my fair share of students asking me when they're going to receive their next belt or tape around it. And, well, it's not the right way to go about things.

Why? Because it shows your coach that you're focused on your belt more than on something that's way more important.
Your skills. Which, if you improve them, will most certainly land you that next color around your waist.

So, the proper way to ask your coach for the belt promotion is: "Coach, what do I need to work on?"
You've got to ask for feedback. For constructive criticism, which your coach will almost certainly give.

And when they give it to you  be it about a technique (or techniques), concept(s), your mindset and attitude, whatever it is... You've got to take it to heart.
Don't ignore it. Don't just accept it. But accept it and take advantage of it.

Correct your mistakes (or do your best to do so). Then ask for feedback again. And again.
Repeat the process for as long as it takes, until you have to ask about a different position/technique/concept. Or until you're given advice about it without asking.

That is the only right way to "ask for a promotion". And it's the only way that works.
The only way that will keep you progressing to black belt  and beyond!
