Rafael Lovato Jr. is one of the most decorated grapplers of his generation: a 2007 IBJJF World Champion, a two-time ADCC medalist, and an 11–0 professional MMA fighter. For most of his adult life, competing at the sport's highest level was simply what he did.
In 2022, he competed at ADCC one last time, finished fourth, and walked away certain he was done. Then he became a father. The thing he expected to end his competitive career turned out to be the reason he came back. This is his account, in his own words, of the run he almost didn't make.
