ADCC 2024: The Rafael Lovato Jr. Story
The story of the 41-year-old father who almost didn't compete, and what happened when he did.
He Retired From ADCC.
Then He Went Back For One More.
In 2022, Rafael Lovato Jr. finished fourth at ADCC and called it: no more ADCC. Then he became a father, and the thing he thought would slow him down lit a fire instead. Six weeks before the tournament, a rib injury from a title fight nearly ended the run before it started. He fought through it anyway. This documentary is the record of how, and why.

At ADCC 2022, Rafael Lovato Jr. walked away from the biggest stage in grappling without a medal, a fourth-place finish in the under-99kg division. He said it himself: that was his last ADCC.
Two years is a long time to sit with an ending you chose yourself. Rafael kept training anyway, not for a comeback, he'd say, just because that's what he does. Then he became a father, and the thing he expected to slow him down lit a fire instead. Six weeks before the tournament, a rib injury from a title fight nearly ended the run before it started. His ribs were jammed out of place, and he spent ten minutes underneath one of the best grapplers in the world just surviving. He trained through it anyway.
In 2024 he stepped back onto the ADCC mat one more time, against a field of grapplers half his age, at a point in his career when most competitors in this sport have already retired.
This documentary is the inside account of that run: the training, the corner, the decision to go back, and the tournament that followed.
Last round. Best round.
The story behind the comeback.
The Moment
“Eleven years ago, I was on that podium with a pouty look on my face. This time, I'm going to smile.”
— Rafael Lovato Jr.
The Comeback
What it actually took to get back on the mat at 41: the training, the doubts, and the six weeks that almost ended it before it started.
The Return
What fatherhood had to do with a decision nobody saw coming, and the injury that nearly ended it before it started.
The Aftermath
Rafael's own account of what the comeback meant to him, in his words, not a highlight reel or a recap.
This isn't just a highlight reel.

Rafael said he was finished. Two years later he proved that a decision made in the moment isn't the same as the truth. This is a story about changing your mind and backing it up.
If you compete
A world-class comeback, broken down from the inside: the preparation, the strategy, and the split-second decisions most people never get to see.
If you've followed his career
The most personal look yet at the competitor behind the Grand Slam, the world titles, and the Bellator belt, told in his own words, from the inside of a run he almost didn't make.
You've seen the clips. You haven't seen this.
Rafael has shared plenty for free over the years: interviews, highlights, moments from the mats. This isn't more of that. It's the one, complete account of the 2024 run, told start to finish, with access that was never part of the public feed.
One story, not fragments
A complete, edited throughline from the decision to return to the moment it was over, not scattered clips pieced together after the fact.
Access the public never got
Training camp, corner conversations, and moments that were never posted anywhere, at any point.
His words, in full
Not a caption or a soundbite: the actual, extended reflection on why he went back and what it took.

Twenty years of proving age is the wrong question.
Rafael Lovato Jr. is a multiple-time BJJ and no-gi world champion, former Bellator Middleweight World Champion, and two-time ADCC medalist. He's spent two decades building Timeless Jiu-Jitsu around one idea: technique and timing outlast speed and youth, if you train that way on purpose.

"I've watched every ADCC highlight reel there is. This wasn't that. Seeing what it actually took to get back on that mat at 41 changed how I think about my own training."
Sarah Whitfield
"I trained through both my pregnancies and figured competing was behind me. Watching Rafael come back for his daughter instead of in spite of her, that reframed the whole thing for me. This isn't a highlight reel, it's proof you don't have to choose."
Diego Ramirez
"I run a competition team and I've put this in front of every one of them. The corner access alone is worth it. You don't get access like that anywhere else. It's the realest look at a title run I've seen."
